Bitcoin Core Overhauls Security Disclosure Policy as AI Accelerates Vulnerability Discovery

Facing unprecedented speed of AI-assisted bug hunting, Bitcoin Core has revised its security protocol to rapidly patch easily-discoverable flaws rather than rely on traditional disclosure embargoes.

AI Changes the Rules for Vulnerability Management

Bitcoin Core has fundamentally shifted how it manages software security vulnerabilities, abandoning lengthy disclosure embargoes in favor of rapid fixes for flaws that artificial intelligence can quickly uncover. In a message to the Bitcoin Development Mailing List, Bitcoin Core developer Antoine Poinsot explained that large language models have fundamentally altered the threat landscape, making traditional secrecy-based protection strategies obsolete.

Historically, Bitcoin Core withheld vulnerability details under extended disclosure periods, giving users time to upgrade before the public learned of flaws. However, this approach prevented security patches from reaching older software versions, forcing users to wait for the next major release. Poinsot noted that secrecy now offers minimal protection: “The embargo period achieves little but it delays the availability of a fixed release,” he said. “We are therefore updating our policy disclosure to accommodate those.”

A Tiered Approach to Security Disclosure

Rather than a one-size-fits-all framework, Bitcoin Core’s revised policy categorizes vulnerabilities by their discoverability and risk level. Issues deemed “easily discoverable”—those requiring only minimal effort such as a straightforward LLM prompt—will receive immediate fixes deployed across all supported versions, with security advisories released simultaneously.

Other flaws follow a severity-based disclosure timeline. Low-risk vulnerabilities face disclosure two weeks after a major version release containing the fix, while medium and high-severity issues receive a two-week grace period following the final affected release reaching its end-of-life status, typically one year after the fix appears in a new major version. Critical vulnerabilities, which threaten Bitcoin’s fundamental security architecture, remain subject to ad-hoc procedures determined case-by-case.

Industry Pressure Mounts

Bitcoin Core’s policy revision reflects mounting pressure from AI-assisted security research across the entire crypto ecosystem. In August alone, the volunteer Bitcoin Red Team identified approximately 5,000 potential security issues spanning 390 different projects, though roughly one-fifth had been independently verified at that stage. That same month, Core Lightning developers urged operators to upgrade immediately or take their nodes offline following a wave of AI-generated vulnerability reports that developers temporarily withheld from public disclosure.

The change has drawn measured support from security advocates. Luke de Wolf, host of the Bitcoin Infinity Show and author of “Defending Bitcoin,” acknowledged the update as progress: “I’ve disagreed with Antoine’s approach to security in the past, but this is a good update.”

This policy shift signals how the entire crypto industry must adapt to a new reality where AI is reshaping the pace of vulnerability discovery and disclosure.
