MoonPay Launches AI Payment Vault for ChatGPT and Claude
MoonPay has unveiled PayBox, a payment vault enabling ChatGPT and Claude users to authorize cryptocurrency transactions through natural-language commands while maintaining custody of their digital assets.
Bringing Crypto Transactions into AI Conversations
MoonPay has introduced PayBox, a new payment vault that integrates cryptocurrency functionality directly into conversational AI platforms. The tool enables users of ChatGPT and Claude to instruct these AI systems to execute a range of crypto activities—purchasing digital assets, exchanging tokens, and transferring funds across different blockchain networks—all through natural-language dialogue. Users link their crypto wallets and payment methods to their chosen AI assistant, allowing it to prepare transactions based on their spoken or typed instructions. This approach moves crypto operations from specialized exchanges and wallet interfaces into the familiar environment of AI chat applications.
Architecture Prioritizing User Control and Security
Central to PayBox’s design is a security architecture that prevents both the AI assistant and MoonPay from gaining independent access to user funds. The vault employs multi-party computation and trusted execution environments to protect the private keys that control users’ assets. This means a compromise of either the AI system or MoonPay’s infrastructure cannot immediately result in theft of user holdings. Users maintain granular control over how much autonomy they grant: some can require passkey approval for every transaction, while others might establish spending caps and permission profiles that allow the AI to act independently within preset boundaries. The vault supports multiple blockchain networks and integrates with conventional payment methods—debit cards, bank accounts, Apple Pay, and PayPal—giving users flexibility in funding their crypto activities.
Part of a Broader AI-Native Payment Infrastructure
PayBox is built on x402, an open payment protocol originally created by Coinbase. In April 2026, Coinbase contributed the protocol to the Linux Foundation, where it evolved into a vendor-neutral industry standard. Coinbase has continued expanding the x402 ecosystem in 2026, releasing tools that allow AI agents to accept USDC payments, conduct token trading, and locate paid services through an AI-powered marketplace. AWS integrated x402 into its Bedrock AgentCore Payments service earlier this year, and Fireblocks launched an x402-compatible payments framework while joining the x402 Foundation, demonstrating institutional adoption across major infrastructure providers.
According to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, agentic payments on Coinbase’s Base network surpassed 100 million transactions within nine months. More recent data shows the ecosystem’s continued growth, with over 12.7 million transactions processed across x402 services in the past 30 days. MoonPay plans to offer developers an SDK to integrate PayBox into their own AI applications, broadening the infrastructure’s reach.
As AI systems gain the ability to autonomously manage financial assets, secure infrastructure that preserves user sovereignty while enabling seamless automation becomes critical for mainstream crypto adoption.
