Aviva Investors Launches Tokenized Fund on XRP Ledger Following Central Bank of Ireland Approval
London-based asset manager debuts blockchain-based access to regulated US Dollar Liquidity Fund with Irish regulatory clearance.
Regulatory Milestone for Blockchain Finance
Aviva Investors, the asset management division of London-based Aviva Plc, has launched a tokenized share class of its US Dollar Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger following approval by the Central Bank of Ireland. The introduction marks a significant regulatory milestone, providing qualified investors with blockchain-based access to a regulated money market fund through digital wallets while maintaining the stringent custody and investor protections characteristic of institutional finance.
The tokenized fund replicates the investment strategy of its conventional counterpart, allocating capital to short-duration, high-quality US dollar-denominated securities. Its holdings encompass debt instruments and money market products issued by governments, banks, and corporations. Investors in both the tokenized and traditional share classes experience identical investment objectives, liquidity profiles, and risk-return characteristics.
Hybrid Custody Model Bridges Traditional and Blockchain Finance
The fund’s operational structure demonstrates how blockchain can enhance financial infrastructure without requiring established custodians to abandon proven protective mechanisms. BNY Mellon, a globally recognized custodian, retains responsibility for holding and safeguarding the fund’s underlying investment assets. Komainu handles digital asset custody, while Licuido provides the technical infrastructure necessary for token issuance and management on the XRP Ledger.
The Central Bank of Ireland’s approval of this architecture suggests that European financial regulators increasingly view properly-designed tokenized funds as compatible with existing investor protection frameworks. The launch builds upon an earlier partnership between Aviva Investors and Ripple, the organization behind the XRP Ledger, which supplies the distributed ledger technology underpinning the tokenized shares.
Growing Momentum in Institutional Tokenization
Aviva’s fund exemplifies a broader institutional shift toward blockchain-based financial products. Within the XRP Ledger specifically, the fund follows Archax’s 2024 tokenization of UK asset manager abrdn’s US Dollar Liquidity Fund. On the broader financial landscape, prominent global asset managers—including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and Apollo—have each launched tokenized versions of their funds, indicating substantial institutional appetite for blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
This expanding adoption reflects a fundamental recalibration in how major financial institutions perceive public blockchains. Rather than viewing blockchain networks as speculative alternatives to traditional finance, established asset managers increasingly recognize them as complementary infrastructure capable of improving settlement efficiency, enhancing operational transparency, and broadening access to professionally-managed investment products while preserving the custody standards and regulatory compliance frameworks that institutional investors require. The mounting institutional adoption of real-world assets on public blockchains—particularly those receiving formal regulatory approval—validates the utility of blockchain networks like the XRP Ledger for regulated finance and suggests sustained demand for underlying network infrastructure.
