GnosisDAO Backs Historic Shift: Gnosis Chain Transitions to Ethereum Layer-2
Following a decisive community vote, Gnosis Chain will transform from an independent blockchain into an Ethereum-settled layer-2 rollup, enhancing composability within Ethereum's expanding ecosystem.
Community Approves Gnosis Chain’s Layer-1 to Layer-2 Conversion
Gnosis Chain has received overwhelming community backing for a major architectural overhaul that will reposition it as a layer-2 settlement solution on Ethereum. The governance proposal, identified as GIP-153, passed with strong support from 123,158 tokens cast in favor by 54 distinct voters, while opposition and abstentions remained negligible. The total vote participation reached 123,425 tokens, substantially exceeding the 75,000-token quorum threshold required for adoption.
This transition marks a fundamental shift in how Gnosis Chain operates. Rather than continuing as a standalone blockchain with its own validator infrastructure, the network will cease validator operations and instead settle all transactions directly on Ethereum. The changeover is scheduled for implementation between late 2026 and early 2027, contingent upon the readiness of supporting EEZ infrastructure.
Unlocking Cross-Chain Interoperability and Enhanced User Experience
The move transforms Gnosis Chain into what’s known as an Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) rollup, utilizing zero-knowledge proofs to ensure transaction validity. This technical framework, developed jointly by Gnosis and ZisK with financial support from the Ethereum Foundation, enables a novel capability: smart contracts on Gnosis Chain will execute calls to Ethereum-based protocols and incorporate the results within the same transaction block. This synchronous interoperability addresses a significant gap in current layer-2 offerings, granting users seamless access to Ethereum’s liquidity and asset base from within an optimized transaction environment.
Throughout the transition, Gnosis Chain will preserve all existing smart contracts, user account balances, and its native xDAI token, ensuring continuity for its established user base and developer community. As the inaugural deployment of the EEZ architecture, Gnosis Chain pioneers an approach designed to reduce the fragmentation plaguing Ethereum’s current layer-2 landscape.
Resolving Ethereum’s Layer-2 Fragmentation Challenge
The EEZ framework tackles a persistent architectural problem within Ethereum’s scaling ecosystem. At present, 22 independent Ethereum rollups secure approximately $27.82 billion in assets, while the broader universe of scaling solutions—encompassing validiums and other configurations—manages $34.88 billion in aggregate value. This distributed model has historically forced users and developers to navigate liquidity silos and incompatible infrastructure across separate networks.
The EEZ approach promises to reduce this fragmentation by enabling smart contract coordination across participating rollups without requiring traditional cross-chain bridge technologies. These bridges, which frequently become targets for security breaches, have emerged as vulnerability vectors within the scaling ecosystem. According to analysis from Standard Chartered’s Geoffrey Kendrick, shared with Cointelegraph, the EEZ architecture diminishes bridge dependency while simultaneously improving asset usability across Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks. His assessment highlighted how this model could facilitate greater composability, permitting smart contract applications across different networks to interact synchronously within individual transactions. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has previously emphasized concerns about centralized sequencers and the trust assumptions embedded in current bridge designs, framing them as structural weaknesses in existing layer-2 implementations.
Gnosis Chain’s transition to an EEZ rollup demonstrates how major blockchain networks are consolidating around Ethereum’s layer-2 ecosystem, potentially reshaping the broader competition in cryptocurrency scaling solutions.
