Bitcoin Rally Flips Strategy’s Massive Bet From Loss to Profit
Strategy's 840,447 BTC holdings swung from $13 billion underwater in July to $1.4 billion in unrealized gains as Bitcoin surged nearly 23% in five days, reaching $77,000.
Strategy’s Bitcoin Treasury Swings Back to Profit After Historic Rally
Michael Saylor’s Bitcoin-focused company Strategy has recovered from significant losses to post unrealized gains following a dramatic five-day price surge. The company’s 840,447 BTC holdings are now valued with approximately $1.4 billion in paper profits, representing a 2.4% gain, after Bitcoin rose above the company’s average acquisition price of $75,385.
The turnaround marks a sharp reversal from July’s downturn, when Bitcoin plummeted to around $58,000, leaving Strategy’s massive holdings roughly $13 billion underwater. The latest rally demonstrates the volatility inherent in bitcoin treasury strategies, particularly for companies holding such substantial positions relative to their total market capitalization.
Strategic Pivot in Treasury Management
Strategy’s recent Bitcoin management approach represents a notable shift from Saylor’s longtime public stance advocating never to sell the asset. Since May, the company has liquidated 6,948 BTC for approximately $432.5 million. During the week ending August 9, Strategy sold 1,690 BTC for $109 million, using those proceeds to buy back STRC, its variable-rate perpetual preferred stock, ultimately reducing total holdings to 840,447 BTC.
Rather than continuing Bitcoin sales, Strategy pivoted the following week, raising $334 million through MSTR share offerings instead. The company deployed these funds across preferred stock dividends, STRC repurchases, and its dollar reserve, which now totals $4.8 billion. This approach allowed Strategy to raise needed capital while maintaining its core BTC position through an equity rather than asset-sale strategy.
Regulatory Momentum Accelerates Market Strength
Bitcoin’s surge reflects broader market momentum tied to regulatory developments. The rally accelerated following President Trump’s call to Congress this week to advance the Clarity Act, proposed legislation designed to establish a comprehensive federal framework for digital assets. The framework would divide oversight between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The regulatory push gained further credibility when CFTC Chair Michael S. Selig announced that his office would prepare crypto market structure rules should Congress fail to enact the legislation. According to Selig, “If Clarity continues to stall because of Democrat obstruction, the CFTC will utilize its existing authorities to begin establishing a regime for crypto asset markets.”
Bitcoin has surged nearly 23% over five consecutive days, marking its strongest run in recent months after spending much of the summer trading in the low-to-mid $60,000 range. At current levels near $77,000, Bitcoin remains substantially below its October all-time high of $126,000. Strategy’s share price reflected this momentum, climbing roughly 10% during Friday pre-market trading to reach $120, the highest level in two months. Clear regulatory guidance—whether through Congressional action or CFTC initiatives—could prove crucial for driving sustained institutional adoption of Bitcoin and the broader crypto ecosystem.
