A major investment bank forecast has outlined an ambitious scenario for Bitcoin’s medium-term trajectory, projecting the asset could surge to $150,000 by mid-2027 and $300,000 by 2029. The analysis attributes this potential advance to the convergence of sovereign debt crises and accelerating institutional capital inflows into cryptocurrency markets.
Yet this bullish scenario carries a critical technological condition that market participants cannot ignore: the successful development and implementation of quantum-resistant cryptography across Bitcoin’s network before quantum computers mature enough to threaten existing security protocols.
Quantum Vulnerability: A Hidden Price Depressant
Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments, has articulated what many institutional investors may already be pricing in—that current quantum computing risks are already suppressing Bitcoin’s valuation by approximately 30 percent. This “risk discount,” Edwards suggests, reflects legitimate concerns among large capital allocators who remain wary of protocol vulnerabilities.
The technical threat is substantial. Between 20 and 30 percent of all circulating Bitcoin is believed to be directly vulnerable to Shor’s quantum algorithm, which could theoretically compromise the public key cryptography securing these holdings. Most critically, this includes early Bitcoin wallets and addresses associated with Satoshi Nakamoto, whose public keys remain visible and exposed on the blockchain for all to examine.
This vulnerability has not escaped the attention of other blockchain ecosystems. The Ethereum Foundation recently overhauled its Layer 1 security framework this month, specifically replacing the Poseidon2 cryptographic function with SHA-256 and BLAKE alternatives. The foundation has targeted 2029 for implementing these enhanced protections, signaling that quantum resistance is becoming an active priority across the industry.
The Race for Solutions and Market Reality
Bitcoin Core developers are actively exploring remedies to this challenge. Two proposals currently under discussion—BIP-360, which would introduce post-quantum addresses using the ML-DSA algorithm, and the more radical BIP-361, which would forcibly restrict access to vulnerable legacy coins five years after an upgrade—represent different approaches to the same problem.
Recognizing the stakes, Galaxy Digital has invested $5 million through its Bitcoin Quantum Readiness initiative to accelerate progress on these solutions. Such funding commitments underscore how seriously the institutional sector views this technological race.
From a near-term perspective, however, on-chain data from Glassnode tempers some of Bernstein’s optimism. Current pricing models suggest a mathematically supported peak between $134,000 and $180,000 for the current market cycle. Before reaching even these levels, Bitcoin must first overcome significant resistance at $70,920, where existing position costs and selling pressure converge. This suggests that while the long-term narrative around institutional adoption and macroeconomic pressures may prove sound, immediate technical resistance must give way before Bernstein’s supercycle thesis can unfold.
Successfully addressing quantum vulnerabilities could unlock the next phase of cryptocurrency adoption by removing a critical security concern that institutional investors cannot ignore.
