Ethereum Researcher Targets December 2028 for Quantum-Resistance Transition
Justin Drake, Ethereum Foundation researcher, announced an accelerated quantum-resistance timeline of December 2028, one year earlier than the foundation's September roadmap target.
Accelerating Ethereum’s Quantum Defense
Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has announced an ambitious acceleration of the blockchain’s quantum-resistance roadmap. Speaking at the Devcon 8 conference in Mumbai, Drake revealed that Ethereum is targeting December 2028 for completion of its post-quantum and post-AI transition—one year ahead of the Ethereum Foundation’s previously announced deadline. The foundation had established December 2029 as the target date in its September roadmap, making Drake’s December 2028 goal a significant advancement in timeline.
To achieve this accelerated milestone, Drake outlined that developers must successfully deliver three additional network upgrades within a 24-month window. Earlier in August, Drake had detailed the broader strategy, which includes deploying production-ready leanVM technology in 2027 as a foundational component, followed by post-quantum deployments across Ethereum’s execution, consensus, and data layers throughout 2028. This phased approach demonstrates how the network intends to systematically integrate quantum resistance across its entire infrastructure.
Formal Status Remains to Be Determined
Despite Drake’s optimistic pronouncements at Devcon 8, it is important to note that his stated timeline does not formally replace the Ethereum Foundation’s existing roadmap. The foundation has scheduled a reassessment of its official timeline for January 2027, which suggests that Drake’s December 2028 target represents an aspirational goal rather than a locked-in commitment. This approach allows the development community flexibility to adjust timelines based on actual technical progress and any unexpected obstacles that may emerge during implementation.
Industry Competition and Skepticism
Ethereum’s push toward quantum resistance has not gone unnoticed by other blockchain projects. In October, the Starknet community voted to support research into establishing Starknet as an independent post-quantum layer-1 network, suggesting that quantum security is becoming a competitive priority across the blockchain ecosystem. Eli Ben-Sasson, Chief Executive Officer of StarkWare, has publicly expressed concerns about Ethereum’s timeline, stating that the original 2029 deadline was arriving too late and cautioning that ambitious development deadlines frequently experience delays.
The competitive urgency around quantum resistance reflects broader industry concerns about the long-term security of current cryptographic standards. As quantum computing technology advances, blockchain networks are recognizing the need to transition to quantum-resistant algorithms well before quantum computers pose an actual threat. Ethereum’s accelerated timeline positions the network as a leader in this critical transition, potentially setting the pace for how other major blockchain platforms approach their own quantum-readiness preparations. This shift across major blockchains toward quantum resistance strengthens the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem’s long-term security posture.
