“Not your keys, not your coins” is one of the oldest rules in crypto. If your XRP sits on an exchange, you are trusting that exchange to stay solvent and secure. Self-custody means holding your XRP in a wallet you control. Here is how to do it safely.

1. Understand what a wallet really is

A crypto wallet does not actually store your XRP — the XRP lives on the ledger. Your wallet stores the private keys that prove ownership and let you move it. Whoever controls the keys controls the coins. That is the entire game.

2. Choose the right type of wallet

  • Hardware wallets (like a Ledger device) keep your keys offline on a physical device. This is the gold standard for larger amounts.
  • Software wallets (mobile or desktop apps) are convenient for smaller, everyday amounts but stay connected to the internet.

3. The XRP reserve requirement

One quirk unique to XRP: every XRP Ledger account must hold a small minimum reserve to stay active. This is not a fee — it is locked in your account and simply cannot be spent below that threshold. New holders are often surprised by this, so it is worth knowing up front.

4. Protect your seed phrase

When you set up a wallet you receive a recovery phrase (usually 12 to 24 words). This phrase is your money. Write it on paper, store it somewhere safe and offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone — including people claiming to be support. No legitimate service will ever ask for it.

5. Common-sense safety

  • Always double-check the destination address before sending.
  • Send a tiny test amount first when using a new address.
  • Many exchanges require a destination tag for XRP deposits — leaving it out can lose your funds.
