Japanese Gaming Giant Gumi Launches $18M Crypto Fund Amid Growing Digital Asset Bet
Game developer Gumi is entering the institutional crypto space with a new joint venture fund focused on Bitcoin and altcoins, signaling deepening corporate interest in digital assets as Japan considers regulatory changes.
New Fund Focused on Bitcoin and Altcoins
The 3 billion yen fund (approximately $18.3 million) will commence operations on Saturday, according to Gumi’s announcement. The venture is structured as a joint operation through SBI Crypto Fund, a newly formed entity that is 51% owned by SBI Financial Services and 49% owned by gC Labs, Gumi’s crypto-focused subsidiary. The fund will be supported by Daiwa Securities Group and additional investors, providing substantial backing for its operations.
The fund’s investment strategy emphasizes Bitcoin and major altcoins, with plans to employ staking mechanisms, portfolio rebalancing, and hedging strategies to manage risk and generate returns. This diversified approach reflects institutional-level investment practices adapted for the crypto asset class.
Strategic Bridge Between Corporate Japan and Crypto Markets
Gumi positioned the fund as a bridge connecting Japan’s corporate sector with the broader cryptocurrency market. The company is building an operational track record that could support a potential future lifting of Japan’s restrictions on crypto exchange-traded funds, a regulatory change that many in the industry view as significant for market maturation.
The fund launch builds on Gumi’s expanding presence in cryptocurrency markets. Beyond this new venture, the company manages its own substantial crypto holdings through subsidiary operations and provides portfolio management services via Hinode Technologies. Notably, Gumi’s crypto strategy is centered on XRP, reflecting confidence in the digital asset as a core holding.
Doubling Down on Digital Assets
Gumi’s commitment to cryptocurrency has intensified significantly. As of April 30, 2026, the company held 14.13 billion yen in crypto assets, representing a dramatic expansion from 7.58 billion yen just one year prior. This nearly doubling of holdings underscores the company’s conviction in digital assets as a strategic component of its business.
The fund launch represents one of Japan’s clearest signals yet that major corporations view cryptocurrency not as a speculative investment but as an institutional-grade asset class worthy of serious capital allocation. If Japan’s regulatory environment shifts to permit crypto ETFs, funds like this one could become models for broader corporate participation. For XRP and crypto broadly, this represents a turning point in Japan’s acceptance of digital assets as institutional-grade investments.
