To address the most frequent source of custody losses—human error and negligence—Todd proposes structured educational programs modeled directly after driver training courses. Such initiatives could systematically train users in proper security protocols and substantially reduce the percentage of custody-related losses stemming from inadequate knowledge or careless mistakes. Multi-week courses focused specifically on cryptocurrency security could establish baseline competency standards and best practices.

Within this framework, technical vulnerabilities may still occur, but they would represent a secondary risk compared to the systemic threats posed by centralized platforms. The fundamental problem in self-custody, Todd contends, is not Bitcoin’s underlying architecture or hardware wallet design, but whether individual users accept personal responsibility for their security practices and implement what they learn.
