Million-Dollar Short Squeeze Traps Cardano Traders as ADA Reversal Sparks Liquidation Cascade

Cardano (ADA) broke a pattern of relative calm on liquidation charts in early August as margin traders caught in an unexpected price reversal faced $1.63 million in forced closures, with short sellers absorbing $1.09 million in losses.

The Bearish Miscalculation

Cardano typically remains peripheral to major liquidation events on cryptocurrency exchanges, with Bitcoin and Ethereum dominating those charts. However, early August disrupted that pattern. Margin traders had positioned themselves heavily on a bet that ADA would breach its late-July floor of $0.150 and continue deteriorating. This consensus conviction proved costly when price action moved in the opposite direction.

The Reversal Triggers Systemic Liquidations

Rather than failing to hold support, ADA’s price reversed sharply upward. The token attacked and broke through the $0.185 resistance level, accelerating to $0.193 in an impulsive move. This action triggered margin calls across short positions, forcing sellers to cover losses at unfavorable prices. The forced covering itself accelerated the rally, creating a self-reinforcing squeeze that systematically eliminated bearish positions from the market. According to CoinGlass liquidation analysis, the damage totaled $1.63 million in ADA liquidations. The imbalance was striking: short sellers accounted for $1.09 million of that figure—representing more than 66% of all liquidations. Long positions experienced almost no damage, underscoring how thoroughly one-directional the move had been. After this initial surge, price cooled to $0.1857, converting what had been resistance into support for buyers.

Structural Setup Favors Another Squeeze

The liquidation environment suggests the pressures remain unresolved. The RSI indicator sits at 54.22, indicating neither overbought nor oversold conditions. CoinGlass’s liquidity mapping shows an additional $1.12 million liquidation cluster positioned at $0.19396—requiring only a 4.45% rally to trigger. Below current levels, buyers maintain asymmetrical protection: the price would need to decline 7% to reach support at $0.17102. This structural skew tilts the playing field toward bulls; even a modest directional push toward $0.194 would methodically liquidate remaining short positions, potentially amplifying any upward momentum further.

Liquidation cascades across mid-cap assets like ADA reveal how leverage dynamics can create outsized volatility regardless of which cryptocurrency is involved, a risk that applies equally to XRP and other marginable assets.
