Privacy Features in Crypto Address Legitimate Financial Protection Needs
A new report argues crypto privacy tools serve essential functions for those facing sanctions, corporate threats, and physical harm.
Legitimate Uses Beyond Illicit Activity
A joint report from cryptocurrency exchange ChangeNOW and digital asset manager CoinRabbit makes the case that privacy-focused tools in blockchain technology address genuine financial protection needs rather than existing solely to facilitate illicit activity. The report, drawing on research from firms including TRM Labs, Chainalysis, and the RAND Corporation, demonstrates that financial privacy—far from being a new concept—has long existed in traditional banking systems.
Individuals Under Sanctions and Government Control
One striking example involves ordinary citizens in sanctioned nations. When Iran faced SWIFT exclusion, regular residents lost the ability to receive international payments and remittances while political elites maintained alternative financial pathways, according to the report. Separately, according to statements from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Operation Economic Fury seized approximately $1 billion in Iranian cryptocurrency holdings, including a $344 million stablecoin freeze on the Tron network. For vulnerable populations in authoritarian environments, privacy-preserving tools can restore access to financial services. The report notes that enforcement oversight typically concentrates at the point where crypto converts back to traditional currency, not at privacy tool usage itself.
Corporate entities face different exposure. Public blockchain data allows anyone analyzing a company’s wallet to map vendor relationships, payment patterns, estimated payroll figures, and supply chain dependencies—intelligence that would remain confidential in traditional banking. Research from Statista cited in the report indicates that 36% of board members expressed concern about internal financial data becoming public, with data breaches averaging $4.44 million in costs.
Personal Security Threats in a Transparent Ledger
High-net-worth individuals encounter a particularly dangerous vulnerability. Public blockchains allow attackers to identify wealthy targets and their exact holdings, creating what security researchers call “wrench attacks”—physical threats targeting cryptocurrency holders. CertiK documented 52 such verified incidents during the first half of 2026 involving $124.1 million in losses, representing a staggering 12-fold increase from the same period in 2025. France experienced 33 of these attacks following security breaches at France Travail and ANTS systems that enabled attackers to match home addresses to suspected crypto portfolios. Following the incidents, French authorities prosecuted 88 individuals, including minors.
ChangeNOW and CoinRabbit’s research found that approximately half of surveyed high-net-worth holders face real vulnerability to scammers who exploit blockchain transparency to identify and target victims. Walter Barrett, Chief Strategy Officer at CoinRabbit, observed that public blockchain structures transform private wealth into auditable data accessible to anyone with internet access.
According to TRM Labs data referenced in the report, 2025 illicit transaction inflows reached $158 billion, with 84% of fraud proceeds flowing through stablecoin networks—highlighting that privacy tool misuse, while real, represents a separate challenge from preventing legitimate users from protecting themselves. For a maturing crypto market seeking institutional adoption and broader acceptance, establishing clear distinctions between legitimate privacy use and illicit activity becomes critical to long-term industry credibility.
