Morgan Stanley Deepens Crypto Bet With 23% Bitcoin ETF Increase in Q2
Major Wall Street player Morgan Stanley expanded its digital asset exposure significantly in the second quarter, boosting Bitcoin ETF holdings while adding substantial positions across Ethereum, Solana, and stablecoin platforms.
Institutional Bitcoin Momentum Accelerates
Morgan Stanley has demonstrated a marked increase in its cryptocurrency fund allocations, with the investment banking giant reporting a 23% surge in its BlackRock Bitcoin ETF holdings during the second quarter of 2026. According to the firm’s Q2 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Morgan Stanley expanded its iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) position to approximately 16.5 million shares, up from 13.4 million shares in the prior quarter—an addition of roughly 3 million shares.
The expansion reflects ongoing institutional appetite for regulated Bitcoin exposure, even as Bitcoin prices declined through the quarter. While Morgan Stanley added significant IBIT shares, the overall position value contracted by roughly 18%, falling to $549 million from $667 million as Bitcoin prices retreated during the period. Separately, Morgan Stanley established a sizable position in its own Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT), holding 2.57 million shares valued at approximately $43.3 million following the product’s April launch.
Multi-Asset Diversification Strategy
Beyond Bitcoin, Morgan Stanley’s quarterly filing reveals a diversified approach to digital assets. The firm more than tripled its Ethereum ETF exposure, increasing iShares Ethereum Trust holdings by roughly 202% to 4.6 million shares. Additional Ethereum positions were strengthened, including a 26% increase in Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF shares to 5.1 million.
The bank also made strategic moves into alternative digital assets, initiating new positions in Solana-focused funds through the Grayscale Solana Staking ETF and Fidelity Solana Fund, representing approximately $6.5 million in combined exposure. Notably, Morgan Stanley dramatically expanded its stake in Circle Internet Group, the company behind the USDC stablecoin, increasing holdings from 1.46 million to 8.32 million shares—a move suggesting confidence in regulated stablecoin infrastructure.
Selective Crypto Infrastructure Bets
Morgan Stanley’s portfolio adjustments extended into Bitcoin mining and blockchain infrastructure assets, with the firm adding positions across Cipher Digital, Core Scientific, Hut 8, and Bitdeer Technologies. Meanwhile, some existing crypto-linked holdings were reduced or eliminated entirely. The bank shed roughly 550,000 Coinbase shares and significantly cut its CleanSpark position by over 3 million shares, while fully exiting an approximately 8 million-share position in Bitfarms.
The selective profit-taking in some areas alongside aggressive expansion in others suggests Morgan Stanley is actively recalibrating its crypto exposure toward what it views as stronger fundamentals and growth opportunities. These allocation decisions reflect broader Wall Street trends toward spot-trading vehicles and staking-focused products as institutional-grade crypto infrastructure matures.
As traditional finance continues integrating digital assets into mainstream investment strategies, Morgan Stanley’s expanded allocations signal institutional confidence in Bitcoin’s role as a portfolio diversifier and the emerging ecosystem of regulated crypto platforms.
