Ripple’s RLUSD Stablecoin Breaches $2B Market Cap, Eyes PayPal USD’s Position
Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin has surpassed $2 billion in market capitalization since its December 2024 launch, positioning itself as one of crypto's fastest-growing regulated dollar-backed assets and within striking distance of PayPal USD.
RLUSD Reaches Major Milestone
Ripple’s RLUSD, a regulated U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, has crossed a significant threshold by reaching a market capitalization of $2.035 billion, according to CoinGecko data. The asset launched just months ago in December 2024, making its rapid ascent among crypto’s fastest-growing regulated stablecoins particularly noteworthy. A substantial portion of this growth has concentrated on the XRP Ledger, where RLUSD’s supply now approaches $1 billion.
Recent activity demonstrates robust ecosystem demand. Multiple minting operations have injected fresh liquidity, including issuances of 40 million, 25 million, and 20 million RLUSD tokens, alongside additional smaller tranches of 19 million, 14 million, and 12 million tokens released from the RLUSD Treasury.
Stablecoin Hierarchy and Growth Trajectory
RLUSD has established itself within crypto’s top stablecoins, ranking seventh by market capitalization. It trails Tether’s USDT (approximately $183 billion), Circle’s USDC (roughly $73 billion), Maker’s USDS (about $9.7 billion), Dai (approximately $4.5 billion), and Ethena’s USDe (more than $4 billion). However, it sits notably close to PayPal USD, which commands a market cap of roughly $2.87 billion—less than $1 billion ahead of RLUSD.
This positioning places RLUSD on a potential collision course with PayPal’s offering. Should RLUSD maintain its current growth momentum, challenging PayPal USD’s standing among regulated dollar-backed assets appears within reach.
XRP Ledger’s Rising Prominence
A significant shift has occurred in RLUSD’s deployment strategy. While Ethereum initially dominated the stablecoin’s cross-chain presence, the XRP Ledger has emerged as the primary growth engine. This rebalancing underscores the appeal of XRP Ledger infrastructure for regulated stablecoin issuance and highlights Ripple’s ecosystem development.
The migration toward XRP Ledger positions RLUSD within a broader regulatory-friendly framework tailored for institutional adoption and international payment corridors—use cases where compliance and efficiency converge.
