Satoshi’s Genesis Block Puzzle Attracts Community as Cryptographic Clues Emerge
A mysterious Bitcoin puzzle tied to the Genesis Block has sparked renewed interest among blockchain analysts, with fresh clues revealing a complex cryptographic challenge requiring two keys derived from Satoshi Nakamoto's original message.
A Puzzle Embedded in Bitcoin’s Foundation
An intriguing cryptographic puzzle emerged on the Bitcoin blockchain on August 23, 2026, leveraging data embedded within the Genesis Block—the first block ever created by Bitcoin’s anonymous founder Satoshi Nakamoto. According to Galaxy Research, as reported via their X account, the puzzle was written in human-readable format within Bitcoin Block 963,629. The puzzle’s creator designed a wallet with minimal entropy that reportedly requires no backup, presenting a compelling challenge that has captivated blockchain researchers and the wider community.
Deciphering the Challenge: New Details Surface
As analysts began investigating the puzzle, the creator responded to inquiries about its structure. According to Galaxy Research, when asked whether the witness script employed a hash lock, multisig, or another approach, the response clarified it was structured as a multisig arrangement. Further questions revealed critical clues: the puzzle involves two cryptographic keys with both required to solve it, though discovering their derivation remains the central challenge.
By August 25, Galaxy Research released evolving details about the puzzle’s architecture. The jackpot had accumulated to 125,779 satoshis by that time, with hints revealing that both keys derive from the same field within the Genesis Block without hash processing, and are derived independently along the BIP48 path specification. The field itself references a historical newspaper publication—The Times, which printed the headline “Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks” on January 3, 2009, the identical date Satoshi mined the Genesis Block.
Research Efforts Intensify
Alex Thorn, Head of Research at Galaxy Research, has devoted considerable effort to solving the puzzle and shared his progress publicly. According to his updates, the prize pool had grown to 142,779 satoshis—valued at approximately $111—at the time of his analysis. While Thorn himself has not requested additional hints, he documented that the broader community’s computational efforts have already generated and tested more than 19.3 billion candidate scripts, ultimately ruling each out.
The puzzle carries deep historical significance, connecting directly to Bitcoin’s most iconic embedded message. That Times headline from Bitcoin’s genesis represents Satoshi’s statement about why a decentralized monetary network became necessary during global financial turmoil. This puzzle transforms that historical record into an active cryptographic challenge, bridging Bitcoin’s origins with contemporary blockchain security concepts. Thorn has extended an open invitation for other researchers to collaborate and combine their findings toward solving it. The puzzle demonstrates why Bitcoin’s foundational elements continue to capture the attention of the cryptographic community and inspire innovation in blockchain technology.
