Ledger, Trezor Call for Responsible Vulnerability Disclosure as AI Accelerates Bug Discovery

Hardware wallet giants urge security researchers to follow coordinated disclosure practices and avoid premature publication of security findings that could expose users to attacks.

The AI Acceleration Problem

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape in ways that present both opportunities and risks. According to Ledger, the technology has significantly lowered the barriers to identifying vulnerabilities in software and hardware systems. However, this advancement has created a problematic dynamic: some researchers are publishing their findings before developers have time to deploy patches, as reported by Cointelegraph based on statements from both Ledger and Trezor.

Ledger’s Chief Technology Officer Charles Guillemet described this trend as researchers engaging in attention-seeking behavior at the expense of end-user security. The concern is straightforward—when researchers disclose exploitable vulnerabilities before fixes are available, they provide a roadmap for malicious actors while everyday users remain exposed to attacks.

A Framework for Responsible Disclosure

Both Ledger and Trezor are advocating for structured, coordinated disclosure processes that protect users without stifling legitimate security research. The model is simple: researchers should report vulnerabilities privately, agree on a fix timeline with hardware makers, and only publish details once patches are available.

Jan Komárek, Trezor’s Head of Security, explained the philosophy to Cointelegraph: researchers should engage with wallet makers first, establish a realistic disclosure timeline, publish comprehensive findings once patches ship, and importantly, publish anyway if vendors miss their commitment window. Komárek underscored that a 90-day disclosure timeline represents a genuine obligation for vendors to deliver fixes, not merely a courtesy from researchers.

The 90-day standard has gained acceptance across the security industry as a reasonable baseline, with adjustments possible based on vulnerability severity and remediation complexity. This approach serves researchers, vendors, and users alike.

Why This Matters Now

The timing of this appeal reflects real industry challenges. The hardware wallet sector has experienced significant security incidents that underscore the stakes. Coldcard wallets experienced thefts reaching $100 million, demonstrating how hardware vulnerabilities can result in direct financial losses for cryptocurrency holders. Additionally, a data breach at Trezor’s shipping partner compromised personal information of tens of thousands of U.S. customers, highlighting how security failures ripple through the entire ecosystem.

These incidents illustrate why coordinated, responsible vulnerability handling is critical. Users need time to update devices and implement additional security measures before bad actors can exploit newly disclosed flaws. Premature disclosure eliminates this window entirely.

For cryptocurrency markets and those holding digital assets including XRP, secure hardware wallet infrastructure is fundamental to maintaining market confidence and protecting users from losses.
