Ripple Moves to Capitalize on Institutional Banking’s Blockchain Shift With Strategic Infrastructure Deals
Ripple President Monica Long outlines how new investments in ZILO and Licuido platforms position the company to meet institutional demand as traditional banking enters an era of 24/7 on-chain operations.
The Banking Sector’s Digital Transformation
A fundamental restructuring of traditional finance is underway as banks transition from blockchain experimentation to operational deployment. According to Ripple, this shift represents what President Monica Long characterized as a “light switch flip” – the moment when financial institutions moved beyond pilot programs and into actual production of tokenized assets. This transition extends across multiple asset categories, from liquidity funds to money market instruments, all now operating continuously on blockchain networks.
Long emphasized that this represents an unprecedented change in institutional capital market infrastructure. Banks and financial institutions are increasingly committing to 24/7 on-chain operations, fundamentally altering how traditional finance functions.
Ripple’s Strategic Response
In response to this market transformation, Ripple announced investments in the ZILO and Licuido platforms, a strategic move designed to address the technical infrastructure gap created by institutional demand. These investments represent Ripple’s effort to provide a comprehensive digital asset lifecycle on the XRP Ledger, with particular emphasis on regulated transfer agents and collateral management solutions.
The Ripple USD stablecoin (RLUSD) anchors this infrastructure initiative, currently managing approximately $759.67 million in value and serving as the core liquidity layer for the broader ecosystem. This foundation enables the seamless integration of various asset classes onto a single unified platform.
Accelerating Institutional Adoption
The XRP Ledger’s on-chain footprint has expanded significantly, with institutional assets now totaling approximately $3.97 billion. This growth reflects expanding participation from traditional financial players, including major investment firms and funds.
A recent catalyst for this momentum came with Aviva Investors’ launch of a dollar liquidity fund on the XRP Ledger, an initiative that received approval from the Central Bank of Ireland. This regulatory blessing legitimized the deployment of traditional capital on a public blockchain, triggering further ecosystem expansion.
Real-world asset activity on the XRP Ledger demonstrates concrete institutional engagement, with token holders in the RWA segment increasing by nearly 24% recently. Existing deployments include the British JMWH token, valued at over $2.22 billion, and Ondo’s U.S. Treasury fund OUSG, carrying approximately $212.51 million in assets. Additionally, the ledger now supports credit products exceeding $650 million across jurisdictions spanning from Spain to Brazil.
Long’s description of this emerging infrastructure – a unified platform combining stablecoins, commodity-backed tokens, and credit products all operating continuously – captures the scope of blockchain’s integration into institutional banking. The infrastructure deployment strategy outlined by Ripple executives builds on a foundation already established by major financial participants, positioning the network to scale further as regulatory clarity strengthens.
This convergence of institutional demand, regulatory approval, and Ripple’s infrastructure response suggests the XRP Ledger is becoming a critical infrastructure layer for the broader integration of traditional finance into blockchain.
