Bitcoin Faces Inflation Data Test as Support Holds Through Volatile Week

Bitcoin maintains crucial technical support ahead of inflation releases that will guide Federal Reserve policy, with broader crypto markets watching closely.

Technical Support Proves Resilient Amid Price Pressure

Bitcoin ended its third week of October defending a critical support level at $82,500, a technical barrier that traders view as fundamental to the asset’s near-term trajectory. The weekly candle closed near $83,700, representing a 3.2% decline for the period. Holding this support zone is particularly significant because breaking below it could trigger a return to the previous long-term trading range between $60,000 and $80,000. Analysts have noted this level resembles the type of support retests seen in equity markets, such as the S&P 500’s multiple retests at the 7,300 and 7,600 point levels since May.

Inflation Data Becomes Market Catalyst

Traders have oriented their focus toward two crucial inflation reports arriving this week. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, September’s Consumer Price Index is expected to reach 3.7% year-over-year, marking an increase from August’s 3.4% reading. The Producer Price Index is anticipated at 0.3% month-on-month, compared with August’s 0.2% result. Both increases reflect the ongoing impact of Middle East military activity on fuel prices. For crypto investors, the implications are clear: inflation readings below expectations would reduce the probability of additional Federal Reserve rate increases, allowing capital to flow more freely into risk assets including cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP.

The Federal Open Market Committee convenes October 28 to assess interest-rate policy. Current market expectations, according to CME Group data, assign an 18.8% probability to a rate hike at that meeting from the existing 3.75% to 4.00% range. The December meeting presents a different picture, with markets pricing in a 70.6% probability of a 25 basis point increase to the 4.00% to 4.25% range. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled to meet with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Bangkok on Friday, likely to discuss these economic developments. Bond markets have already begun adjusting, with the 10-year Treasury yield falling to 5.24% and the 30-year yield at 5.60%, down from 24-year highs recorded the previous week.

Geopolitical Shifts Create Oil Market Uncertainty

Energy markets reflected mixed signals as President Donald Trump announced both a potential diesel purchase from Russia and an “energy ceasefire” agreement between Russia and Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated he was unaware of the ceasefire announcement. West Texas Intermediate crude oil traded around $91.50 per barrel, representing a 2% gain from the day’s low of $89.60. Russia’s recent removal of restrictions on diesel exports could release approximately 500,000 tonnes to global markets. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 futures started the week 0.25% higher, positioning near all-time highs.

Whether inflation arrives hotter or cooler than expected will likely determine the path forward not only for Bitcoin’s defense of $82,500 but also for broader crypto adoption as central banks shape their monetary policy course.
